EARLY LIFE AND ACADEMIC BRILLIANCE
Born in Ziradei, a village in Bihar today, in 1884 Dr. Rajendra Prasad grew from humble beginnings to become India’s most respected leader. He was a brilliant student who excelled in the classroom, winning the entrance exam for the University of Calcutta, and earned degrees in literature and law. Insatiable curiosity led him to earn a Doctorate of Law, confirming his reputation as an extraordinary scholar.
When Dr Prasad met Mahatma, his legal career was just beginning. Dr Prasad, inspired by Gandhi’s call for selfless service to the nation and the freedom struggle, quit his law firm to join the fight. He was a staunch ally to Gandhi and participated in important movements like the Salt Satyagraha and non-cooperation campaigns.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s birth anniversary : LEADERSHIP IN NATION-BUILDING
As President of the Constituent Assembly Dr Prasad was instrumental in the formulation of the Indian Constitution.
His leadership at this crucial time showed his ability to mediate and resolve conflicting opinions, and guide the assembly towards consensus.
His efforts led to the creation of an Indian Constitution that has endured as the cornerstone of India’s democracy.
Rajendra Prasad, who began his presidency in 1950, was known for his simplicity and humility. He chose only to draw a small portion of his salary, despite being the highest official. During his second term, he further reduced it.
He made a decision that reflected his commitment towards the ideals public service and fiscal responsibility.
He led the relief effort with extraordinary vigour during the devastating Bihar earthquake in 1934. He organised aid and offered solace to many affected families.
His compassion won him the hearts of people all over the country.
In 1962, Dr Rajendra Prasad received the Bharat Ratna – India’s highest civil honour – in recognition of his contributions.
In the same year, he retired from public service due to health problems. He spent his last years at Sadaqat Asram in Patna where he wrote and did social work up until his death in 1963.
